Renewable Lighting Case Study:
South Carolina Research Authority
Colite Technologies and SCRA have partnered to replace a total of 32 older on grid lighting with renewable lighting systems over six phases. Reduced power usage will result in electricity costs savings of roughly $12,600 over the life of the units and close to 196 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided.
Colite Technologies and SCRA are replacing 32 on-grid lights with renewable systems across six phases, saving about $12,600 in electricity costs and avoiding nearly 196 metric tons of CO₂ over their lifespan.
Project Overview
- The South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA) was chartered in 1983 as a public, nonprofit corporation to foster innovation in SC’s economy.
- Carolina Research Park was established over 25 years ago as a state-of-the-art industrial park in Columbia, SC.
- A significant portion of the existing on grid lighting in the park is nonfunctional; repair and replacement would be costly and time consuming.
- SCRA replaced a total of 32 older on grid lighting with renewable lighting systems over six phases.
- Lighting systems are totally off grid and self-sustaining no costly rewiring or trenching required.
- Project is eligible for 26% federal investment tax credit and 25% South Carolina state tax credit for renewable energy systems.
- Reduced power usage will result in electricity costs savings of roughly $12,600 over the life of the units.
- Close to 196 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided over 20 years.
- Certain units feature a WiFi connected camera surveillance system for enhanced security in key areas of
the park. - Custom branded signage draws visitors’ attention and promotes the SCRA name.
Save Money By Going Green With Solar Energy
Helps SCRA Meet Their Sustainability Goals
Over their 25-year life, these 32 renewable lighting systems operating on average 12 hours a day will avoid over 196 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions—equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions from driving 499,126 miles in an average passenger car or burning 217,720 lbs. of coal.
Major Cost Savings on Power Bills
These self-contained units are completely off-grid, generating all of their electricity from the sun, and incorporate battery storage to ensure reliable operation throughout the night. No extension of the grid and no monthly utility energy costs
Long Lasting American Made Photovoltaic Panels
The 32 high performance panels were each made in the USA and will deliver 25 years of life. The onsite monitoring system allows for real time tracking of power production, making it easy to see the system’s performance at a glance and troubleshoot any problems if they arise.
On the Cutting Edge of Innovation
The technological and economic viability of renewable powered lighting for outdoor applications such as parking lots, roadways, pedestrian pathways, and parks has definitely arrived.

Clean, Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is one of the easiest ways to move towards a sustainable future. Solar energy is clean, long lasting, and helps us move away from dependence on fossil fuels.
Solar Energy is an Investment in the Future
By producing on-site solar energy your company will enjoy reduced monthly electric bills. All of our commercial solar systems are fully interconnected with the local power grid, meaning that your business will have uninterrupted power delivery, day or night.
Show Your Customers That You’re Committed to Sustainability
Customers prefer working with companies who support green initiatives. Our renewable energy lighting solutions serve as a clear demonstration of your company’s sustainable values.
We Make Permitting and Tax Credits Easy
Most commercial solar PV installations require local permits and working with the utility company to arrange the power interconnect. Colite Technologies handles these details, making your transition to solar power easy. Additionally, we help you determine which governmental tax credits and benefits your system is eligible for and assist with the application process.
